Man, we are really going to wade into the deep end with this physical media conversation. Full disclosure, I’m an avid physical media collector. Have been for most of my life, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. I don’t pirate, I don’t buy bootlegs, and I don’t use some of these legally dubious media hub platforms that a lot of people use.

Physical media will likely always be superior to streaming – both in terms of video and audio quality, and in being freed from any after-the-fact censorship, George Lucas-style tinkering, or greedy companies deciding that you don’t actually own that digital file anymore. We’ve already seen multiple examples of all of these things, and we will undoubtedly see many more in the future. Add to that the ever-increasing cost of (and number of) streaming platforms, and it’s just not for me. I keep my subscriptions to the Arrow Player and Shudder. I’ve had an Amazon Prime account pretty much since it started – but between price increases, changes to the overall Prime benefits, and the recent decision to insert ads unless you pay even more, I’ll likely cancel that when my current year is up.

Now here comes a possibly more controversial take. A lot of the time, I’m right on the same page with Dave Zee – but I think he missed the mark a bit here. His position that people buying titles on “day one” or paying full price for boutique titles somehow inflates pricing and is bad for collectors is shortsighted at best. The people paying for limited editions and picking up titles on day one at full price are, in large part, keeping the boutique labels running and enabling them to go after bigger (or more obscure, or more difficult to license and restore) titles. Not everyone has the funds or desire to buy things right away, or to chase down every “bells and whistles” limited edition, and that’s okay! But if everyone waited until titles were on sale to make any purchases, we’d likely see fewer releases overall… and eventually, we’d likely see a number of labels fold. Prices at all stages of production have increased dramatically over the last five years, and a lot of rights holders are thinking we’re still in the heights of the DVD era and asking astronomical prices for films that would have a hard time making those sums back. So if you like a label, support their releases when you can! If you’ve got the income and interest to do so, subscribe to labels that offer a subscription model. Buy direct from labels you trust, or barring that, use indie retailers like Diabolik DVD and Orbit DVD over faceless entities like Amazon or big box stores like Walmart.

I don’t think that physical media will ever fully go away – but much like vinyl, we will likely see it ebb and flow, and be focused more on a niche group of passionate collectors.

Here endeth the rant.

I was thinking that someone would have that response. Only because I’ve heard it from others in the past when I’ve discussed it. Really all I’m saying is that $40 is too much for most titles but especially the ones that are blind buys and potentially polished turds.

I feel people should be more discerning before doing those day 1 blind buys on anything and everything. I believe these boutique labels would be fine offering them for $25 but as long as people continue to be marks like that then they have no reason to lower prices. Maybe if people did wait for sales they would get the hint. I appreciate that these labels are around but I can’t blindly assume that the profit margin is as low as collectors think just because they are grateful for their existence. DZ

My nephews, aged 3 & 7 yrs, really love their DVDs, the packaging, the little booklets with extra pictures. Just keeping the collection on their shelf and picking one out is a fun part of the experience for them.

Adding to the discussion, in our streaming dystopia I think product placements will continue amp up and become more targeted at individual viewers. The the products will be tailored to each viewer based on their profile, watch history, search history and data.

On the other hand, stuff goes out of print. Like I want to get the 70s Hanna Barbara Godzilla cartoon for my nephews; aside from expensive used DVDs, the only way to get it is streaming. ‘War of the Gargantuas’ is also out of print.

This media vs streaming debate was amazing. One of best episodes I’ve heard on any podcast in awhile. Can’t wait for part 2. A fun question to ask is how many dvd does each host own. I know Dr shock is prob nearing 15k. I’m curious of other hosts. And I agree that censorship makes me want to buy all my favorites before they get edited. Like the exorcist streaming has the crucifix scene cut out. Lame ha
