Oh my! Episode 024 of Jay of the Dead’s New Horror Movies is one for the ages… Seven of your nine hosts passionately debate what will probably be the most divisive Horror movie this year — Halloween Ends (2022), the gripping (and somewhat surprising) conclusion of David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy. Despite our earnest efforts, our first hour of discussion is NOT spoiler-free. It has moderate spoilers. Then after the first hour we move into deep-dive, full-blown spoilers. This review is a spirited debate! Join us!

I’m so happy Halloween Ends is as divisive as it is, otherwise we wouldn’t have gotten this amazing debate between elite horror movie podcasters. This is peak podcasting, I loved it! I can’t wait to see the movie after both sides have presented their case.

As a side Note: Would you guys be kind enough to explain your rating scales. They seem all over the place and each person’s criteria is different. Example of Watson’s 4 rating which seems very low for some people, but he did a great job in explaining it (I happen to rate movies very similar scale to him). Dave Zee tends to give a lot 8s, I still have yet figure out what an 8 rated movie means for him, to me an 8 is a GREAT movie, to him it may not. Mackula rates on a 100 scale, so for example what makes a movie 80/100 for him.

Just curious if you guys could briefly touch up on that individually. What rating is AVERAGE, what rating is GOOD, what rating is GREAT.
I think it would give the listeners a better sense of where you guys are coming from.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

My friend, I would LOVE to hear how the other gentlemen on the show explain their rating systems!

I feel like I may have explained mine somewhere in the past, but to put it simply enough…

On my 1 to 10 point scale, 5 sits in the middle as my NEUTRAL ground zero, if you will. Everything from 5.5 and upward is a positive rating. Everything from 4.5 and downward is a negative rating. It’s almost like putting two 5-point rating systems back to back like mirror images of one another, I guess. LOL.

To determine exactly how positive or negative I feel about a movie, it all depends on how far from that initial Neutral 5 we get.

For instance, a 4 and a 6 are both one point removed from the Neutral 5… one in the positive direction & one in the negative direction. These are ratings that describe an AVERAGE movie. Nothing too good or bad either way.

A 3 and a 7 are both two points removed from the Neutral 5, and this is where we get into the ABOVE/BELOW AVERAGE territory.

A 2 and an 8 are both three points removed from the Neutral 5, and this is where we get into movies that I could say STRONGLY DISLIKED/STRONGLY LIKED.

A 1 and a 9 are both four points removed from the Neutral 5, and this is where we get into straight up HATE & LOVE territory.

I guess if I go any lower than a 1, it’s because I find NOTHING redeemable about the film. This doesn’t happen very often, honestly. I tend to stay away from these sorts of movies if I can. LOL.

That said… a 10 rating simply means that I would change nothing about the film. Nothing at all. I need to have that feeling as though I’d written the movie myself. I need to feel like all of my personal sensibilities have been put to screen. It’s not a sacred rating by any means. I know some people who NEVER give a 10. I know others who give 10s out constantly. I’m comfortable with 10s as I see them and can’t wait to watch another!

So, I hope that helps explain how my numbers work. This means that even a 3/10 isn’t as low as it sounds. Same with an 8 maybe not being as high as it sounds.

Much love!

Dear David Gordon Green,

Please don’t “Halloween” The Exorcist.

Great discussion gents, this is certainly a divisive finale. Some excellent points made from both sides of the debate. The exploration of the effects of trauma on individuals and society is an interesting topic for sure, just not one I wanted from the supposedly final Halloween movie. Gregamortis succintly summed up my thoughts when he said that sometimes it’s ok to just make a slasher movie and leave it at that.

Folks – I love your show, but please..

David Gordon Greene and Danny McBride: We’d like to submit the our script for the Halloween film we are contractually obligated to complete.

Studio Exec: Great – what’s it about?

DGG & DM: Well, we figured we’d introduce a new character in this last film of the trilogy and follow him for the entire film. You see, he’s a put upon kid with a tragic backstory and he’s picked on by a pack of feral band kids. And you see, Michael Meyers transfers his evil to him, well, because. And then Michael becomes the kid’s wingman.

Studio Exec: Okaaaaay. I’m on page 40. Is Michael Meyers even in this thing?

DGG & DM: He is. He figures prominently in the last 10 pages or so. But you know, we really wanted to do something different with this film, something that really plays against the expectations of the fans for you know, the last film in a trilogy. You see, the real Halloween fans are tired of the formula. They just don’t know it yet.

Studio Exec: Oh, so it’s like…Elevated Horror? Where the real villain of the story is trauma?

DGG & DM: Ummm….sure.

Studio Exec: Great! Is $20 million enough to make this? To whom should I write the check?
