Dr. Moody himselfRevised Top 10 Horror listsNHM Halloween Special 2025

Happy Halloween 2025! In this electrifying Halloween Special, Jay of the Dead and Mackula welcome esteemed guest, Dr. Rick Moody, retired film professor and first-time podcaster, for a very controversial and unconventional “count-up” of their Revised Top 10 All-Time Best Horror Movies! Dr. Moody is one of Jay of the Dead’s mentors, and he was also the film professor of three Horror Avengers: Jay, Mackula and Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop! Doc Moody was formerly more into disturbing Horror movies but has since mellowed in recent years. Even so, he remains a big fan and connoisseur of Found Footage and lesser-known Horror content found on YouTube! But back to this show… As Doc Moody would say, Episode 168 “delivers the goods” with not one but three Top 10 lists, and trust us, you’ve never heard all-time favorite Horror lists like these before! Y’all are probably gonna have kittens!

Along the way, the hosts pay tribute to the late Diane Keaton, discuss Shelley Duvall as Mackula’s “cinema mom,” and reflect on the eerie setting of this episode, as it was recorded during an atmospheric and formidable, Utah thunderstorm. As each movie pick is revealed, the conversation meanders off into relevant and random tangents about some of Horror’s dark corners, such as “Experiential Horror.” During this show, we also reveal which Horror Avenger longs to moonlight as a “ghost therapist.” Listeners will even hear about Mackula’s past ambitions as an actor; his live, on-air freak-out over fingernail tapping at his window; and an impromptu cameo from Dr. Moody’s cat, “Mimi.”

With humor, insight, and devil-may-care-giving-zero-effs attitudes, these three Horror fans celebrate some notable contenders of the Horror genre (as well as some shocking selections outside of it). As Dr. Moody reminds us, “A really good Horror movie is something you’d never wanna see.”

Note: This episode was recorded during an appreciable thunderstorm in Utah County, on October 11, 2025, the day actress Diane Keaton died.

After years of hearing about Dr. Moody on Jay’s various podcasts, what a joy it was to finally hear from the man himself! And what a refreshing list he had. So often top 10 lists are a mix of consensus classics (The Thing, Halloween, The Exorcist, etc.) and nostalgic favourites, so I was surprised and delighted to hear Dr. Moody’s approach to the task. Not beholden to being arbitrarily varied or respectful of any film’s legacy — just ten scary as hell movies!

Super fun episode, gentlemen. Dr. Moody is a total blast! He must get on the mic more often!

These top 10 lists were a trip, guys… specifically Dr. Moody’s & Mack’s. I love seeing lists like these that are ultimately unique. Too many have the same films, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s neat seeing a top 10 that reads like no one else’s.

Dr. Moody’s inclusion of found footage horror is refreshing, and I will ALWAYS celebrate a top 10 list with more recent films, as opposed to the same handful from the 70s & 80s that we see all the time (excellent as they may well be).

Now, Mack’s list… talk about unique! There are five films on his list… HALF of his list, folks… that I personally would not have even considered to be “horror.” LOL! We all know that horror is in the eye of the beholder, but it just would never have occurred to me to put The ‘Burbs, Jurassic Park, Godzilla: Minus One, Prey, and ESPECIALLY Casper in the horror genre. I can see arguments for Minus One & Prey, though, as monster movies. I get that. Including The Others is a stroke of genius. Again, what a list, man! Gotta love it.

Don’t think I’m leaving Jay’s top 10 out. His list is basically one 10 after another. Props to Jay for putting Bone Tomahawk in there! That’s what I like to see!

Good work, guys.

Jay! It’s about time you started acknowledging The Village as a horror movie! Great episode!

Here’s my top 10 of all time if anyone is interested:
1. The Thing (1982)
2. Scream (1996)
3. The Shining (1980)
4: Jaws (1975)
5: Halloween (1978)
6: Tremors (1990)
7: Evil Dead (2013)
8: Get Out (2017)
9: The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
10: Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Agreed, if The Terminator is a slasher then The Village is most definitely a horror movie!
