I remember having the same visceral reaction last time some of you discussed No Escape as being horror. While the situation and events are horrific, a horror movie it is not. It’s like calling Rambo (2008) a slasher, because essentially it is, right?

From Dr. Walking Dead & Ron Martin’s segment, asking about legacy characters used effectively in new movies. Sometimes it is done well, examples below:
–“Shin Godzilla”
–“Shin Ultraman”
–“The Shape of Water”
–“The Invisible Man”

Don’t know if it counts, but I thought the “legacy” characters were done well in Scream 4, H2O and a couple of other movies, but mostly the scripts of these movies rely too heavily on the nostalgia factor and forget to write a decent script. Hey — it’s it cool that Laurie Strode is back even though it makes no sense in the continuity. Oh, let’s just ignore some movies — act like they never happen — superhero franchises do it all the time. Even taking that into consideration, its still two senior citizens fighting one another which normally doesn’t make for the best horror flicks.

Hey guys!
Another great episode. Looking forward to the Top Ten for this year, going to be interesting for sure. Living in Iowa, I’ve been going to Haunted places here for years. Couple years ago, my sons and I went to Villisca. It is a very creepy place. We had reservations to spend the night, but my youngest got too scared and backed out. We took the tour and took plenty of pictures. The house is exactly like it was in 1912. In the lobby, there are tons of News articles about what happened and how it hasn’t been solved. The theory I think that is the most possible is there was a Train route being built pretty close to Villisca. People think it was a worker that murdered the family. If I remember right, the Mother took food and drinks down to the workers, and they believe a worker followed her home and later murdered them. It is a sad story for sure. I didn’t see any Ghosts or anything like that, but there is a very somber feeling floating around the place. You should visit if you are in Iowa. There are a couple other places that are worth visiting in Iowa as well. One of note, is the Edinburgh Manor. That is the creepiest place I’ve been so far in Iowa. It has so many sad stories attached to it. If you need some other recommendations, please let me know. Until next time.

Dark Passenger,

My friend, I did not see your comment until just now, and I want to sincerely thank you for this reply! There were so many details about the Villisca case that I couldn’t include, but I don’t recall running into anything about workers who might have done the killing. That’s super scary! And wow… how cool to have been able to see the murder house for yourself!

I never did bring this up to the other Horror Avengers, but wouldn’t it be freakin’ awesome if all 9 of us spent the night in this house and documented the hell out of it? Ron Martin is a ghost-hunter, so he could do his thing… I dunno… that sounds amazing to me!

Much love to you, homie. And yes… please give me recommendations about haunted places!

This is a true treasure trove of content for Halloween. Thank you, Avengers, for giving us so much content to listen to!

I love it, even the hyperbole that was bound to happen with the Blumhouse Halloween trilogy. Great to get these takes from Dr. Walking Dead and Mister Watson on that trio and, my goodness, was I excited to get the Franchise Festival bit from Doc Kyle on my personal favorite, Hellraiser.

Speaking of the Blumhouse Meyers three..

I can appreciate the knee-jerk reaction from Watson as I was just stunned as the credits rolled in the theater by Halloween Kills. The notion of taking the Shape and amping him up to the point of near deity-status, an unstoppable killing machine might have been better in different hands. The idea of evil being an infection in the town that spreads and we see the ramifications of this.. again, another idea that doesn’t quite work and is not executed well.

Spoilers I guess..

Ends is such a mess. You can feel the differing tones and very different movies all being jammed together and it just doesn’t fully work (especially after I watched it again). I’d be so on board with Corey if they had actually SEEN IT THROUGH. Don’t jerk the wheel the other direction again just for the sake of “wrapping” the trilogy if you’re building towards something else entirely.

I can almost feel some respect for them trying to riff on themes and ideas that were in prior sequels. Each movie is “distinct” in that manner. But David Gordon Green and the different writers never manage to get a full grasp of the big ideas they’re trying to inject in while STILL being a big profitable movie.

Blumhouse is really a bane when it comes to horror, I feel. Thank goodness for A24.

My friend, you are speaking my language here! Well said on all counts. Even after a second watch, I just don’t have what it takes to appreciate Halloween Ends like I wish I could… and this is coming from someone who really did enjoy the hell out of Halloween ’18 & Kills. A lot of people really did appreciate the subversion of expectations, and hey… that’s just fine with me… I just ain’t one of ’em. Haha.

What are some of your favorite A24 horror films? I did a segment on that a while back, so I’m curious what you think, homie. Much love!

My fellow Horror Avengers (in a minor key) were so impressive on this episode! Even being part of this show… there are so many things for which I wasn’t present that I would love to respond to directly, but who the hell knows if or when I could swing that. All I know is that I’m blessed to be a part of what I’m convinced is the single best horror film review podcast I’ve ever heard.

Hi again Jay,
As a way to say thank you for this long, long episode which I’m looking forward to enjoying while I work, and also for taking the time to review ‘Wild Tales’ a few episodes back… I have another recommendation for you! I just finished watching it. It meets all the criteria that you look for in a film, so I felt I had to post here again…
The film is called ‘Victoria’ from 2015. This is quoted from online and I have edited it a little to remove any spoilers. I would say watch this one blind, without any prior knowledge apart from this: “A two-hour feature film in one take, spanning so many locations, timing extras, injecting characters and interactions at just the right moments, calibrating lighting and environment, and encouraging ad-libbed dialogue throughout to keep the pace moving, is a conceptual nightmare. It is arguably one of the purest contemporary examples of Bazin’s style of mise-en-scène filmmaking, in which long takes and the choreography of camera and elements within the frame interact to create an impression of realism and a world that exists beyond the frame we see.” If that doesn’t sell it to you, then as a bonus, there are elements that will strongly appeal to the musician in you. It unfolds at a natural pace, but there is a point in the movie where everything changes and it goes somewhere very special. Hope you can stream it relatively cheaply in the States… I picked my dvd copy up at a charity shop (I think you call them ‘thrift stores’) in the UK. This is one that I’m going to hold onto. Anyway hope you haven’t seen it and I felt it’s an important movie, due to the way it was made and one that you must eventually see! Don’t worry, I watch all your recommendations and listen to all your podcasts 🙂 Cheers, Ollie

The only good thing about being sick this week is having an excuse to lay on the couch and listen to podcasts. I still haven’t made it through the hole episode because I do have to do things like sleep, fix food, etc. However, I do want to throw one thing into the “mythbuster” portion. We would not Halloween H20 without Scream. The brothers who ran Dimension, who shall not be named, were going to go all Hellraiser on the Halloween franchise after 6. BUT, because of Scream, Jamie Lee came back and we got H20. I have other things to say but I need to go pump myself full of meds and lay back down. All the best, gents and keep up the great work.

Just wanted to say I was super happy to hear Gillman Joel and Mackula discuss the HK classic Mr. Vampire. I loved these movies when I was younger and I’ve spent a bit of time in Hong Kong and Asia in general. With regards to their discussion about how these vampires differ from “western” vampires, the Chinese names shed some light on this. Western Vampires are called 吸血鬼 Xīxuèguǐ. which literally translates to Blood Suck Ghost, while the Vampires in Mr Vampire are known as 僵尸 Jiāngshī, which literally translates to Stiff Corpse, and if often translated as Zombie. So even in Chinese they make a distinction between them. The real origin story behind Jiangshi may be an old fashioned way of transporting corpses back to their home village for burial using bamboo poles, this also explains the hopping.

Yes! A Jiangshi film makes it onto the podcast! Wayde beat me to the punch here, so I’ll just echo his insights. In the folklore, someone with powerful magic must be hired to raise the dead and then command them to “hop” back home for burial. As they are this raised and commanded, they do fall under the umbrella of traditional zombies, but the films are all zany “vampire” fun! There are a ton more of these kinds of film from Hong Kong, boys, if you want more! 😉
