Mister Watson–

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA!!! It sounds like you had a very similar childhood experience with that film as I did. The thing I have always loved most about it is that Jack Burton only THINKS he’s the hero of the picture–he’s actually the sidekick (who gets luck a few times). That’s why I don’t see him as a White Savior at all; Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) is the true hero who saves his own culture from a culturally-related archvillain, Lo Pan (played by the AMAZINGLY prolific James Hong). Kurt Russell makes the film by playing this “joke” to the max from start to finish. I would SO LOVE to see the long-rumored sequel. . . .

By the way, my top three are definitely (1) The Thing, (2) Halloween, and (3) Big Trouble in Little China. Good work, my friend.

Dr. Bishop, look at the two of us… just a couple of peas in a pod, and I love it, sir!

And well said about Jack Burton’s role in the film. We see it 100% the same way, my friend.

Hi guys, and thank you for yet another stellar episode!

Here’s my take on the much anticipated Alien discussion

I am an Alien universe enthusiast, from the roots of Giger’s haunted art that will stick with you forever, to the cinematographic incarnations of the one monster I think all other monsters get nightmares of.

I even read all the novels, for better (sometimes) or worse (most of the times), played video games (including the excellent « Isolation »), and keep original soundtracks close to my favourites.

But back to the movies: not everything is good in the Xenoverse. Some episodes forget to make us care for characters we know are expendable, but should deserve a place under the bleak sun. Some episodes botch perfectly good plot extensions to hopelessly stay both uninventive and confusing.
Some episodes couldn’t translate the silent horror that is an Alien we just don’t know how to begin to understand, whose motivations should be unpredictable, deadly and fascinating.
Some episodes failed at Alien, by being boring, even when the creature chases yet another nameless and faceless convict in yet another identical conduit. Alien cube is not an Alien movie. I don’t think it’s a good movie anyway.
In fact I rank Alien vs Predator high above Alien cube, because even if it is derivative or predictable, I got the chills from it, the adrenaline rush, and the barely successful escape from an overwhelmingly superior opponent.

Alien resurrection is an oddity. It coats the Alien narrative with a layer of craziness I enjoyed very much.
I find the characters have enough substance to make me wonder what path led them to the Auriga research vessel. The story rushes forward, because what else can you really do but run and hope you don’t take the wrong turn?
And true to form, the Aliens urge everyone to reveal their true nature, as if you had to hang on to what human you really are when facing such inhumanity. Even Cole.
Ripley 8 and the newborn stand out, being hybrids on both ends of the human/alien experiment. It feels like they are detached from the reality of the predator/prey game taking place around them. And if Ripley ends up winning thanks to her alien blood, the newborn suffers a horrifying death, revealing an almost human skull in the last instant.

Alien resurrection is one alien of an Alien movie,
It urged me to explore what fan I really am, and that’s a success in my opinion.

Every episode of ‘New Horror Movies’ is equal to about a couple months of material from any average podcast. So I don’t think you’re slacking off at all, Jay of the Dead.

Dr. Walking Dead’s upcoming series sounds really exciting, looking forward to it very much.

Dr. Walking Dead, if I could suggest, ‘Nosferatu’ (1922) vs ‘Nosferatu the Vampyre’ (1979)–it’s the centennial year of Nosferatu, man!

I appreciate that very much, Dr. Walking Dead.
Here we are at maybe the most important horror anniversary of all time and all the horror podcasts are going, like, “Yawn. . . .What’s going on, guys, ever heard of this guy called Dracula? Nosferatu?”
“Nope, never heard of him, please more violence, more violence and gore–Yawn”

I feel so ashamed, Dr. Walking Dead! It’s shameful!!!!

Gregamortis,

‘Shin Ultraman’ update!
After a massively popular release in Japan last month, ‘Shin Ultraman’ will debut in the United States next month at the New York Asian Film Festival, and will follow up at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Canada. Us American fans are hoping a wider release will be coming soon for Western audiences.

I’m hoping a dubbed version will be available, since my nephews are too young to read subtitles.

Judging from the reviews and the clips that I’ve seen, this film will live up to the hype!

Watson. You rule man. Your opinions on carpenters top 20 list was amazing segment. I think Christine should be higher based on practical effects and the story was more about the transformation of Arnie and not as much about the car. I love that you said prince of darkness should be higher totally agree. The fog at 9 was interesting. I love Adrian Barbeau and the atmosphere it creates when she’s in the studio. I agree the fog is a mystery to me also. Is it masterpiece or not. Idk but it’s great still. Agree with you on little china. Wtf is up with that woke review by then lol. Sorry Jack Burton was white? Lol. Anyway. Great movie. They live at 3 is awesome. So cheese 80s but I loved on vhs as kid. So fun but I agree with your complaints but still has special place in my heart. A remake would be great about the messages of media controlling us. And the thing and Halloween at 1 and 2. Perfect placement. I prefer the thing slightly more but either are switchable. Both masterpieces. Fantastic segment man

What is your top 5 Carpenter, man?

Mine is…

  1. Halloween (1978)
  2. The Thing (1982)
  3. Big Trouble In Little China (1986)
  4. Assault On Precinct 13 (1976)

5. They Live
It’s so hard to narrow down to 5. Amazing director indeed

Worth the wait….Love Episode 10. The crazy story that Dr. Shock tells about Outlaw Elmer McCurdy is amazing. GregaMortis, I love your throwback to the kind of movies I grew up watching on Nightmare Theater hosted by THE COUNT played by Joe Towey in the Seattle area. And the It Could Happen To You always gets me. My favorite part of the show is Jay’s infectious cheerful attitude and positivity. Plus, Mr. Watson is intelligent and eloquent as always and I bet he is really handsome. Everyone of the hosts are entertaining, leaving me laughing every episode. Great cast of characters.
