I finally finished episode 006! I’m surprised no one mentioned The Manchurian Candidate in terms of cold water movies (unless I missed it). https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056218/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_27

I am super embarrassed and ashamed to admit that I did not encounter Cemetery Man during all of my in-depth research into 20th-century zombie movies. Thanks for making me aware of it, though! I am, however, EXTREMELY well-versed in Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein. I love to teach it in class when I teach the novel because the students find it so crazy, especially that creation scene. A giant sack filled with electric eels that is inserted into the womb-like tank via a giant mental tube? It doesn’t get any better than that! 😀

Special thanks to Dr. Walking Dead for stating that the TV miniseries IT is an avoid. Yes, Tim Curry is great, but the rest…So many times I’ve read comments from people who found it frightening and I don’t get it. Maybe if you’re aged 6 or under. If you want to see a Stephen King tv adaptation done right, look no further than Tobe Hooper’s ‘Salem’s Lot. Now that miniseries is truly creepy.

Love the show – keep up the great work!

Hi guys. Loving the show so far! I have been listening to many of you since around 2015, so it is cool to get you all in one place.

I have to say, I found the discussion about Ben Shapiro, The Daily Wire, free speech, and “wokeness” to be a bit of a bummer. If you follow Ben Shapiro at all and have heard his commentary on films, it would seem very unlikely that he is actually looking to produce a nonpartisan platform. Hiring Gina Carano for the company’s first project seems to suggest a desire to “stick it to the libs.” I disagree with the notion that Carano was “cancelled.” She made some really ugly remarks on Twitter that should be offensive to anyone regardless of their political affiliation. Disney made a business decision that she could be a liability to their profits and so she was let go. Her free speech was not infringed upon due to the fact that she was not prosecuted or imprisoned. Free speech does not allow you to say anything you want without consequences. You are free to say it, but you gotta accept the fact that it could have an impact. I’m sure it’s the same with any of our jobs. Our bosses would probably fire us if we made similar comments. That’s not us getting “cancelled” or our bosses being “woke.”

I was also frustrated at the bemoaning of all movies being “woke” and having messages or morals these days. I think you’re overlooking a vast majority of media that really does just provide face value narratives without anything deeper. A lot of the time, it feels like people who are complaining about “wokeness” in movies are simply unhappy that we are now getting stories about LGBT, minority, or disabled populations. I don’t want to accuse you of that but I wanted to bring that up because I have always thought one of the great things about horror is how it can be so inclusive and make alienated members of society feel like they are heard. Some movies do not do an artful job of dealing with this subject matter and can be ham-fisted or pandering – I agree that I would like to see less of that. But to ask that we have fewer movies with “wokeness” or messages can sometimes feel like asking to remove the diversity of narratives or the unique metaphorical way that film can deal with important topics. Again, I am not saying this is how you all feel but some people will refer to a movie as “woke” simply because the lead character is gay or Black.

Soapbox over! Of course, you all are welcome to say whatever you want on your own platform. I just felt compelled to share my feelings because the conversation did not sit well with me. Keep on doing what you are doing – giving us the best horror movie podcast that’s out there.

Chris,

Thanks so MUCH for your feedback. I worried a lot about this review because of all the political implications, and I knew it wouldn’t sit well with everyone. My intention wasn’t to stoke the flames of the left/right political debate… namely because I don’t operate by that antiquated binary myself… rather, I wanted to talk about a good movie AND about the idea that there are companies out there that want to operate outside of the Hollywood Machine.

I find that fascinating, and I want to see how it all plays out.

If we are acting in GOOD FAITH here, and if we’re trying to have an intellectually honest conversation about the entertainment monopoly that Hollywood has been running since our grandparents were still young… it begs the question: How do we defend corporate institutions that have historically preyed on women and children in order to make “film?” Perhaps in the decades to come, companies will be forced to rise up in order to create market competition and MAYBE (hopefully) create better models for entertainment companies to emulate. Will the Daily Wire do that? Or inspire someone else to do that? I have no idea. You heard me make fun of Ben Shapiro in our segment, so I’m maybe not the right guy to ask about this, but one thing I know about his company is that they haven’t used The Casting Couch as a model for pulling in vulnerable actresses. So far, it’s Hollywood who does all the child r@pe.

I don’t fit neatly into a “conservative,” “woke,” or “whatever” political spectrum. These are the things I’d prefer to talk to people about while smiling over beers and hugging it out because I love people. And I’ll bet we’re the same there, Chris.

Much love, dude. Thanks for commenting. And just know… I want to see entertainment move in a healthy direction that implies love and inclusion for all of us. My cool ass gay friends, my brown family, and my conservative homies are all looking for the same thing. I hope we get there!

Mr. Watson! Thank you for responding. I am guessing we are both acting on good faith here and not get trying to antagonize on another in order to win points. Obviously, as can be inferred by my post, I am fairly left-leaning and can get sensitive about some of these issues. My spidey sense always starts tingling these days when I hear the words “woke” and “cancelled” because they have been used to death and, for some, have come to mean “XYZ is woke because it features a main character that is part of a minority group.”

I hear what you are saying about having other alternatives to mainstream Hollywood. Despite my partisan preferences, I think it is healthy to have a variety of stories from various perspectives. I know that services like Netflix, Hulu, Shudder, etc are not completely independent from the Hollywood machine but I think they offer some opportunity for non-studio projects. If Shapiro can facilitate a new system that produces great stories and gives the public access to more voices, that would be fantastic. However, given his history, I do not necessarily trust that his non-partisan aims will actually be carried out in good faith.

I have no desire to defend the Hollywood institution. Their history is sordid for sure. That said, I don’t think it’s hypocrisy for someone within that institution to make a film about moral/political issues if they, themselves, were not involved in the sordid past. I don’t think that abuse directly correlates with Hollywood, liberalism, or whatever – unfortunately, I think its representative of the type of abuse that can spread unchecked within any large system with power imbalances. We see the same thing within various religious institutions, governments, corporations, and such. I know many roll their eyes at the MeToo movement, but anything that the players within the Hollywood system can do to reckon with their history and make positive changes is a plus in my eyes.

Here’s the thing, I really like Jay (been listening since around 2014) and the other hosts thoughts about movies, but this episode really needed to be edited. Way to much talk about everything else, like who knows someones wife and singing, basically a lot of talk about everything else. Get to talking about the subject of the show – horror movies and edit the rest.

Jay’s editing is top-notch, but I see what you’re saying as a producer myself. The truth about long-form content is that it tends to allow for a LOT… maybe more than certain people enjoy, and that’s fine. I won’t make any value judgments about your criticism here because you expressed it nicely and clearly… and thank you for that, my friend! You rock… but I WILL say that there are literally THOUSANDS of people who hit the download button so that they can hear about how the hosts are doing because of all the long-term relationships we’ve all forged as a result of all of our years in podcasting. I guess it’s a work in progress, and you can’t please everyone.

Thanks, Carl, for giving us feedback so that way we can figure out how we do this thing called Free Entertainment. I don’t say that lightly nor in jest. I mean that. There’s tremendous utility in learning how to refine how we express ourselves… and that’s true if we’re the peeps ON the mic or the ones listening. Thank you for understanding.

One more comment. Matinee (1993) might be the essential cold war monster movie. It takes place in Florida when President Kennedy confirms Soviet Missiles in Cuba. B-movie horror producer, Woolsey, decides it is the perfect time to hawk his movie Mant! (clearly influenced by Them!) It follows some young kids who live in fear of the attack, practice hiding under their desks in school, and escape into classic monster movies.

In the 50’s after the use of atomic bombs, horror monsters became giant and could destroy whole cities or threaten the whole country. Up until then the monsters were only attacking small groups or villages. Any atomic age monster movie would give insight to the fears of the time.

Good recommendations, hosts! I love Them! I got to see it on the big screen once.

Good luck with your report.

The Giant Claw! Love that review, Gregamortis! I love the look of that puppet. They did have budget issues and outsourced it to a Mexican fx company. No one knew what the monster would look like until the premiere. Whoops!
I made my family watch it on Thanksgiving one time because it sorta looks like a turkey and I wouldn’t watch Thankskilling with my parents. We had a blast.

Hey Dark Mark, the CLAW!!! This giant bird had to be on my mantle once I saw this film lol. I love that you showed it on Thanksgiving because I could totally agree with it favoring a turkey. And yes , Thankskilling is not the beat of movies to show to the family around the holidays, unless you want a very weird conversation lol. Thanks so much for your amazing comment .

Edison Studio’s 1910 Frankenstein is in public domain so you don’t need to buy the Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein blu ray to watch it. Just google it or check out this link. https://youtu.be/HZ-OrfJHHro
First film adaptation of Frankenstein! Must see!!

Love the black and white segment, Mackula! The spiral staircase rocks! I’m sure you have a ton more on deck but I’m going to give some suggestions anyway.
Mr. Watson’s segment featured some great ones, specifically The Eyes of My Mother and Man Bites Dog. Other ones I think you’d like are; The Innocents, The Haunting (leave Jay out our your review), anything by Val Lewton, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Night of the Hunter. I’m always down for any Frankenstein discussion too (maybe Frankenweenie). I’ve emailed Dr. Walking Dead and suggested Frankenstein too.

Ha ha Thanks for the kind words. The people in our everyday lives don’t really tolerate us droning on about Horror for hours, so we appreciate our patient listeners for permitting us. Hope you get to see Ti West’s “X” (if you haven’t already). We’re excited to talk about it in Episode 007! Thanks for listening! -J

This podcast is epic! I can’t wait until the masses find out about you! This is the best horror podcast out there. Creative segments with knowledgeable hosts puts my fingertips into a chef’s kiss at the end of each episode. Keep crushing it my fellow hearts of horror.

Thanks, Gerbrand. We’re glad you dug the episode. We hope you’ll give our upcoming Episode 007 a listen, too! We’re going to be covering some good Horror flicks! Thanks for the heads-up on other places to find “Cemetery Man” online. I think Mister Watson should have bought me a copy of that film, but I’ll probably just steal his version when I visit him. : ) Thanks for checking out our show! -J

It’s a digital copy of Cemetery Man, Jay!

And Gerbrand… I’ve been in a strange prog-metal mood tonight. Listening to Poppy and Periphery right now as I dick around the house. LOL.
